Side note: The white headlights on the GTLM cars bug me. Years of watching endurance racing has trained me that prototypes have white lights and GT cars have yellow lights.

The teams put colored lights on the cars to make them easier to identify in the dark. A line of lights in a unique pattern makes it really easy to identify your car in a pack at night.
As far as I am aware the regulations only address the head and tail lights on the car as well as that the number needs to be illuminated.
